Job Description

Penguin Random House Corporate Bookmaking is looking for a Production Editor to support the Crown Publishing Group. Crown Publishing Group is made up of a dynamic and wide-ranging set of imprints, including Clarkson Potter/Publishers, Crown, Crown Currency, Storehouse Voices, Ten Speed Press, Ten Speed Graphic, Ten Speed Young Readers, and Compendium.

Our Production Editors oversee a range of titles, from initial transmittals of final manuscripts to bound books. Working closely with the editorial, design, and production teams, you will have the opportunity to work on a varied list of gift products, graphic novels, children's picture books, cookbooks, decorating and design books, narrative nonfiction, business, fiction, memoir, and more.

Responsibilities

  • Hiring and assessing the work of freelance copy editors, proofreaders, cold readers, and indexers
  • Preparing and styling initial text transmittals using a custom Penguin Random House Word-based platform
  • Coordinating with the editorial, managing editorial, production, and design departments to see titles through to completion
  • Managing schedules and updating the progress of projects in File Maker Pro
  • Reviewing and collating author and proofreader edits in Adobe Acrobat, which includes additional copyediting, fact-checking, and follow-up with editors and designers
  • Keeping books on schedule and error-free under tight deadlines
  • Copyediting and proofreading supplementary material, such as front matter, back matter, jacket and cover copy, promotional material, etc.
  • Reviewing and approving jacket and cover routings
  • Overseeing the work of freelancers performing quality assurance reviews on ebooks
  • Performing various administrative duties, including invoice processing, system updates, and status reports as well as pitching in on departmental projects

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of publishing experience in a production editorial capacity
  • Proven ability to work on a wide variety of books, including experience on complex nonfiction, such as cookbooks or other illustrated projects, and a desire to expand one's versatility
  • The ability to set and meet deadlines
  • The ability to prioritize multiple assignments in a deadline-driven, fast-paced environment, while maintaining a standard of excellence
  • Strong copyediting and proofreading skills
  • General facility of modern copyediting style and an interest in the evolution of language
  • Very good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work successfully independently as well as part of a team, anticipating problems, troubleshooting solutions, and prioritizing tasks
  • Excellent attention to detail and highly organized
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word (especially the track changes function) and Adobe Acrobat
  • Knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition

Compensation and Benefits

  • This is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities (approximately 2 to 3 days a week)
  • We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, and NY)
  • Salary for this position is $70,500
