Role overview
This Editorial Assistant role in Trade Publishing will provide essential administrative and editorial support to the Editorial Director and Executive Editor for Harry Potter Publishing. You will primarily focus on all core Harry Potter titles, encompassing both frontlist publishing and backlist development, and will also contribute to select other children's book titles. This position offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of children's books, cultivate your editorial skills, and engage with publishing strategy for high-profile titles in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
This position requires a minimum of two days per week working in-office at Scholastic’s NYC (Soho) location. Additional in-office attendance may be required if the essential functions of the role necessitate it.
Responsibilities
- Provide editorial support for all frontlist and backlist Harry Potter titles, including initial review of routing material.
- Coordinate with production, design, and freelancers.
- Draft copy and metadata.
- Review proofs and manage reprint corrections.
- Provide administrative support, including scheduling meetings, note-taking, preparing presentation and meeting materials, handling mailings, file management, and conducting research.
- Offer editorial support on select other titles, ranging from board books and picture books to graphic novels, as needed. This may include reviewing routing passes, drafting copy and transmittals, and evaluating new submissions.
- Coordinate cross-departmentally with Sales, Marketing, Publicity, and Scholastic Reading Events to manage all information and material requests.
- Participate in the ideation of new publishing and backlist opportunities.

- Fluid communication skills in all forms (in person, phone, video, email).
- Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize tasks, and multitask across several projects simultaneously.
- Strong knowledge of and affinity for the Harry Potter books and brand.
- Keen interest in editorial development and publishing strategy.
- PowerPoint / visual presentation skills are a plus.
Experience
and Education
- Entry-level position.
- Bachelor's degree (B.A.).
